The Whale Show at the Whale Museum - July 2007

The Blue Crane, Our National Treasure

The Western Cape has truly become the last stronghold of our endangered National Bird – the Blue Crane.

Once abundant throughout South Africa with numbers reaching somewhere between 100 000 & 200 000, this elegant bird with its enchanting behaviour, unique courtship dance & emotive call, suffered a dramatic population crash in the 1980s. Human impact on their preferred habitat of natural grasslands through forestry and agriculture was the main reason for numbers dipping to well below 20 000.

Today, due to favourable agricultural practices, rigorous conservation measures coupled with the support and the amenable attitude towards Blue Cranes by the farming communities of the Overberg & Swartland regions, this region can now boast to hosting more than half of the world population within its provincial borders.
