    In the 1930s, the Cape Mountain Zebra was on the brink of extinction. To ensure their survival, the Mountain Zebra National Park was established in 1937 and today some 200-mountain zebra inhabit the park. The scenery is exceptionally beautiful, encompassing mountains, ravines and high plateau, with attractive trees and a great variety of aloes and flowering shrubs. Nature trails and the three-day Mountain Zebra Hiking Trail hold the promise of exciting discoveries. Game viewing is rewarding throughout the year, particularly on the Rooiplaat Plateau. Antelope species originally found in the region, as well as small predators and 200 species of birds, including the magnificent black eagle, may be seen.
    Accommodation includes fully equipped chalets, a caravan park and a delightful Victorian guesthouse. There is a licensed a la carte restaurant and a tourist shop; conference facilities cater for 60 delegates. Swimming and horse riding are popular leisure options.

    Seasons
    Summers are warm, and winter nights are cold. Rainfall averages some 390 mm per annum, with regular snowfall on high lying areas.
